More than 250 motorists warned for speeding on Salter Road in 2019

More than 250 motorists received warning letters from the Metropolitan Police after volunteers with speed guns caught them breaking the 20 mph speed limit on Salter Road during 2019.

According to information obtained by SE16.com under the Freedom of Information Act, three two-hour Community Roadwatch sessions were held in Salter Road during 2019.

It took just six hours to record the 257 speeding motorists.

On 2 February 2019, 84 warning letters were generated. Further sessions on 21 June and 27 June 2019 led to 92 and 81 letters being sent.

According to a 2017 report for Southwark Council, “speeding is a significant problem along Salter Road, this is probably due to the nature of the road, which gives the impression that it is a rural road and driving at speeds of greater than
20mph are feel natural and are comfortable”.

SE16 libraries to offer click-and-collect book borrowing

SE16’s public libraries at Canada Water and Blue Anchor are expected to reopen with a limited service next week (starting 13 July).

These libraries will offer an order and collect service, which means that people must pre-ordered their books before visiting the library to collect them.

It will also be possible to return items to the library.

Due to social distancing measures public toilets, printing, wifi and study space will not be available.

Online booking for Southwark Park tennis courts

Tennis players wanting to use the courts at Southwark Park will need to make an online reservation when a new system is introduced from Thursday 9 July.

The online booking system was due to be launched in April but was delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Bookings can be made up to seven days in advance using the Tennis in Southwark website, and individuals can reserve up to one hour a day.

Southwark Council says the booking scheme will “address the frustration of waiting for courts that is experienced at the moment”.

Canada Water station staff ‘racially abused’ – police appeal

British Transport Police have released CCTV images of a man they would like to trace after a member of railway staff was racially abused at Canada Water station .

The incident happened at 5.34pm on Saturday 16 May.

The suspect was told he could not board a train with his bicycle. He is then reported to have racially abused a member of railway staff and threatened him with harm.

He also chased the staff member with a bottle, but slipped on the contents of the bottle which had spilled while he was chasing the victim.

Officers would like to speak to the man in the images who may have information that could help their investigation.

Anyone who knows him is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference number 241 of 16/05/20.

Electric buses make their debut on the C10

A new era began on the C10 bus route this weekend when the first of the new electric buses entered service.

The C10 links Victoria with Canada Water via Elephant & Castle, Bermondsey and the Rotherhithe peninsula.

The fleet of 34 Portuguese-built CaetanoBus electric vehicles is shared with route P5 and is based at Abellio’s Walworth depot near Camberwell Green.

The new buses feature a camera monitoring system in place of conventional wing-mirrors.

There are also USB sockets for passengers to charge their mobile devices.

The new buses will gradually take over from the previous hybrid fleet.

Millwall mural brightens Zampa Road rail arch

Network Rail has worked with community groups and Millwall Football Club to celebrate the team’s symbol – a rampant lion – with a new mural in Zampa Road pointing the way to The New Den.

It’s the latest in a number of collaborations between Network Rail and artist Lionel Stanhope.

Lionel Stanhope said: “I’m really happy to have worked with Network Rail and Millwall Football Club on this mural and I’m pleased with the outcome. It sits well on the wall with strong colours and I’ve received positive feedback from people walking past.”

Steve Kavanagh, Millwall chief executive, said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved at Network Rail for assisting with this project and we’re also incredibly grateful for the efforts of Lionel, who has done a superb job with the new mural. I’d like to extend our thanks to members of Millwall Supporters’ Club who have overseen an initiative organised by the fans, for the fans.”

Eddie Burton, community engagement manager at Network Rail said: “It’s great to see this wall looking so good and I’m really pleased we could do this for Millwall Football Club. We hope the fans and local community will treasure this artwork and the mural will offer a great photo opportunity for years to come”

Balman House: council considering new homes on roof of Rotherhithe New Road block

Southwark Council is considering building new homes on top of a 1960s block in Rotherhithe New Road as part of its plan to construct thousands of new council homes across the borough.

“We have looked at a number of estates across the borough in consideration of which blocks can accommodate roof top developments, and we think Balman House may be suitable,” says the council.

“However, before we consider this further, we want to consult residents that might be affected by our thoughts.”

The initial round of consultation is open until 10 July.

TV show to explore Turner’s Rotherhithe painting

A new TV documentary by broadcaster and journalist Andrew Marr will explorer one of JMW’s most famous paintings – and it has a strong Rotherhithe connection.

The third episode of Great Paintings of the World with Andrew Marr – devoted to The Fighting Temeraire – will be broadcast on Channel 5 at 6.15pm on Saturday 20 June. It will then be available to view on demand via My5.

One of Turner’s most eminent paintings, The Fighting Temerairedepicts HMS Temeraire which played a distinguished role in Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Painted in 1838 it depicts the Temeraire being towed to Beatson’s yard in Rotherhithe to be broken up.

Timber from the ship was used to create an altar and two chairs which can still be found in St Mary’s Church in Rotherhithe.

The painting is on display in the National Gallery and was voted the nation’s favourite painting in a 2005 poll run by BBC Radio 4.

Turner and the Temeraire are featured on the new polymer £20 banknote introduced earlier this year.
