Primary, is the latest production from local theatre company, London Bubble. The show has been created from interviews, research and workshops, then written by Sarah Woods and interspersed with songs by Andy Whitfield. Primary has been slow cooked over nearly two years. Now a community company of all ages bring the citizen perspective to celebrate the place primary schools occupy in our communities and hearts.
London Bubble involves Londoners of all ages in celebrating and sharing untold stories. So far Primary has involved around 100 people in gathering and transcribing stories including Headteachers, School Governors, parents and teachers. These stories form a poignant and powerful telling of the role of Primary schools in our lives. For many a Primary school is the first institution they engage with, occupying a vivid place in their memory. Alongside their role in supporting, educating and socialising young people, they are often appreciated as places of nurture, friendship and creativity, although they can also be associated with experiences of isolation and difficulty.
Well known in the Southwark community for its award winning projects Young Theatre Makers and Speech Bubbles, the company also produces large scale intergenerational shows, aimed at family audiences. Their last show After Hiroshima, performed at the Dilston Grove and explored the UK’s response to one of the biggest single turning points in modern history – the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Japan.
Primary is funded by Arts Council England with support from Team London. The show is directed by Jonathan Petherbridge and written by Sarah Woods with music by Andy Whitfield.
